What is shock testing?

Shock testing is a short duration of high amplitude pulses that simulate a sudden acceleration. It is similar to vibration analysis and is used to simulate shocks and impacts to define the degree to which the product is damaged or fails. Bump or shock tests are a type of environmental test designed to simulate the impact a product is exposed to during use. Specifically, calibrated vibration equipment is used to deliver a repetitive burst of pulses for a given period of time.

Mechanical shock/bump, as it is also known, will expose poor mechanical layout, miss-alignment of components and weaknesses in brittle materials like plastic and glass. The tests are accredited under ASTM D880, D999, D4728 and D6344, IEC 60068-2-6, IEC 60068-2-27 and IEC 60068-2-29.
